🏈 website fumbles––how to avoid

a weekly(-ish) newsletter on websites, workflows, writing & getting paid

Huddle up Reader,

Super Bowl Sunday is in two days (and yes, I’m just there for the snacks– fave recipes below)...

...but can we please talk about how the 49ers didn’t know the overtime rules last year… and lost a championship because of it?

(have I kept an article about this ^^ open in a tab on my phone for 361 days? Yes. Yes, I have. Hoarder status: Pro.)

When it mattered most, the 49ers made a decision based on old information—thinking the game would end as soon as one team scored in overtime.

They didn’t realize that in the playoffs, both teams get possession no matter what. They had a chance to try for a touchdown, but instead kicked a field goal… and lost when the Chiefs responded with the first option.

Oof.

As business owners, it’s up to us to know the rules of the game we’re playing. Simply having a website doesn’t mean it’s doing its job.

Here’s the thing: I know you’re amazing at what you do. You know you’re amazing at what you do. But will visitors get that from your website?

  • What’s your conversion rate?
  • How long are people sticking around before they bounce?
  • Are they coming back?
  • Are they finding you through search engines, social media… or not at all?

This is why the first thing I do with every website build is connect it to Google Analytics.

Because “it looks fine” isn’t the same as “it’s set up to win.”

Which is exactly why I’m calling an audible and bringing back website audits for a limited time—seems fitting for this time of year.

I check the real stuff that impacts your business:

✔️ Is your site easy to navigate, or is it sending people into a maze of broken links?
✔️ Are your words actually connecting with your audience, or are they zoning out?
✔️ Do search engines know you exist? (If not, we have a problem.)
✔️ Is your website loading fast enough, or is it sending potential clients into a spiral of frustration (and straight to your competitor)?
✔️ Can everyone use your site, including those with disabilities?

The 49ers’ problem was not knowing the rules.

Your website’s problem? Maybe you don’t know what’s actually holding it back.

Let’s fix that. Grab a website audit here → AUDIT MY SITE

Pro-tip: Show potential clients how easy it is to work with you by breaking down the steps and focusing on the benefits. Paint a picture that gives a true taste of how easy it is for them to get what they want. Get creative and add in imagery of you working, custom icons, a slider or a simple timeline.
