Smells like good service

a weekly(-ish) newsletter on websites, marketing, funnels & getting paid

Hey, Reader,

When my oldest son was born, I made my very first Etsy purchase: a tiny striped newborn hat that I still have tucked away in his baby box. When the package arrived, there was a handwritten note inside thanking me for my order—but also telling me it was the maker’s very first Etsy sale. 🥹

That tiny detail made the whole experience feel personal.

I see thoughtful gestures like this everywhere–– the handwritten birthday card my financial advisor sends me every year, the familiar Volcano candle scent when I walk into Anthropologie, and the hot coffee & warm cookies every Sunday at church.

None of those things are necessary, but they absolutely shape the experience.

It call it the 'turn down service' for businesses.

Tiny details that make people feel considered. Remembered. Taken care of. Something we need more of as business owners. Clients refer you (and come back) because they remember how the experience felt while working with you.

How do your clients experience your business beyond the deliverables? What are other businesses overlooking that you can make up for?

That’s where the tiny details matter. Things like:
— handwritten Christmas cards

— a lawn company watering the flowers while they’re already there mowing

— a travel advisor sending snacks before a big trip

— a welcome guide that answers questions before clients even ask them

— thoughtful follow-up after the project is over

For me, it’s curating stock photos when clients don’t have any yet. Finishing half-complete brand boards. Adding the perfect favicon. Creating custom marketing plans to help drive traffic after launch day. Giving clients my phone number so they can text me directly.

The things they don’t know they need—but the things that make the experience feel complete.

They’re what turn projects into relationships, clients into repeat clients, and businesses into brands people genuinely remember.

Design & copy tips to attract right-fit clients

Going a little different direction today. While looking for examples of thoughtful client experience, I ended up down a rabbit hole on Printed Mint’s website—and it fit the theme of this newsletter perfectly.

I have zero affiliation with them. I just genuinely love what they do.

Printed Mint helps businesses create beautiful custom gifts and branded products, but what stood out to me wasn’t just the design—it was how clearly they understand their customer.

Their messaging consistently says: "We'll help you look thoughtful, polished and professional without making your life harder."

^^ THAT is genius marketing.

Because the real product isn’t actually packaging or gifts.
👉🏼 It’s removing overwhelm.
👉🏼 It’s saving time.
👉🏼 It’s helping business owners create a polished experience for
their clients.

CONVERSION Q&A

Marketing funnels & strategy for growth

Q: How do I stand out when there are so many people offering the same thing?

A: Most industries are crowded. There are a lot of website designers, photographers, coaches, VAs, copywriters, therapists, landscapers, etc.

But clients rarely choose someone based on skill alone anymore.

➕ They choose based on trust, communication, and how the experience feels.

➕ They choose businesses that do things differently, serve overlooked needs, or solve problems other people ignore.

🚫 Don't go straight to competing on price.

The tiny details matter more than people realize: clear communication, thoughtful follow-up, proactive problem-solving, personal touches, making things easier, anticipating questions before clients have to ask them.
