🎵 Don't you (forget about me) | Summer Mixtape Series

Hey, Reader,

Welcome to my Summer Mixtape series—where each week we're dusting off an old-school business principle and looking at how it still works in a noisy world full of AI, templates, and automation where everybody is an expert.

Track 01: Everybody talks

Track 02: Wannabe

Track 03: I want it that way

Track 04: I'll be there for you

Track 05: That's what friends are for

This week:

Track 06: Don't you (forget about me)

My pre-internet business lesson for today is this: You don't always need more people to find you. Sometimes you just need to stay top-of-mind with the one you already have.

Back in the day, you saw your customers around town. You called people back. You sent postcards. You sponsored the Little League team. Your realtor mailed you a magnet/calendar every January that somehow stayed on your refrigerator until 2004.

You didn't have a “content strategy”. You had relationships. So when someone needed your services, they already had you in mind.

But now, the internet gave us access to exponentially more people—which is so great—but that also somehow made us really, really good at forgetting about the ones who have already expressed interest.

For most of us, the, inquiry process of 2026 goes something like this:

Someone inquires > We send the scheduling link > They don't schedule > Gone.

Someone buys > We deliver > Gone.

Someone downloads the freebie > They get the thing > Gone.

And then we turn around and ask: How do I get more leads? Most businesses treat an inquiry like a transaction when it should be the beginning of a relationship.

🤔 Maybe she got interrupted.

🤔 Maybe he's comparing three companies.

🤔 Maybe the project got pushed until next quarter.

🤔 Maybe she needs to talk to her spouse.

🤔 Maybe they aren't ready to spend $3,000 this Tuesday.

**None of those mean “I never want to hear from this business again.”**

The problem is ~actually, there are FOUR problems~ 1) follow-up depends on your memory, 2) we don't usually get consent to send multiple emails (which makes it spam), 3) it feels awkward, 4) we lose money.

^^ This is exactly is why I changed my own inquiry process—and why I have also started offering this to clients.

Here's what it looks like: Instead of sending someone straight to a scheduling link and crossing my fingers, I give them a tiny first step. Name + email. Then I deliver the scheduling link and have a simple, automated follow-up system behind it:

✔️ If they book, great. The follow-ups stop.

✔️ If they don't, I don't lose the relationship.

✔️ Either way, I continue to nurture and add value.

I call it The Follow-Up Funnel. And it's free for you today. Click HERE to grab it.

As always, if you ever want to chat more about this, as with all my letters, just hit reply. I'll be right here waiting for you 🎵

SIDE 'B' HOMEWORK

Where are people disappearing? Do you have consistent touch points? Not just for leads or potential clients, but for past clients or even side businesses.

  • Inquiries — What happens if they don't book?
  • Prospects — How do you stay useful while they're deciding?
  • Customers — What happens after they buy?
  • Past clients — When do they hear from you again?
  • Subscribers — Are you actually giving them a reason to remember you?

No matter what business you're in, and no matter what the outcome of the first connection, you need a plan for what happens after “Hi, I'm interested.”
